Curriculum Snapshot
SEDP offers curriculum themes for students based upon program values, the seasons, timely community events and other current topics. Each program has engaging, age-appropriate activities.
Our program is purposely flexible, offering a choice of activities, homework time, art, games, cooking, computer games and much more. Each Friday we end the week with a special event such as a birthday party, movie or theme day.
Perhaps most importantly, students spend time on activities teaching them respect and concern for those around them.
Here is a snapshot of what each of our individual SEDP programs has to offer.
- Children are escorted from their classrooms to the Extended Day classroom when school is dismissed.
- Upon arrival, the children put away their belongings, wash their hands and the children are either read a story or play trivia while waiting for all participants to arrive. Once everyone has arrived, the children are provided with a healthy snack and drink, which they enjoy at group tables.
- After snack, all of the children go outside to play, weather permitting. On inclement weather days, the children either play a group game in the classroom or other appropriate available space.
- Students are offered at least 3 daily activity choices, which they select while enjoying group snack. Activities may include but are not limited to art, cooking, science or sports. There is always an option for additional gross motor play and an opportunity for “free play” in the classroom.

Woodward Elementary School (Grades 2 & 3)
- Children are escorted from their classrooms to the Extended Day classroom at the dismissal of school.
- Upon arrival, the children put away their belongings and play trivia or other quiet games while waiting for all of their classmates to arrive. Once everyone has arrived, the children walk down to the rest rooms in small groups, to wash their hands.
- After everyone has washed their hands, they are provided a healthy snack and drink, which they enjoy family-style at group tables.
- After snack, all of the children go outside to play, weather permitting. On inclement weather days, the children play a group game in the gym. If the gym isn’t available, the children will “free play” in the classroom or start on their homework.
- Around 4pm, the children who are signed up for homework time come inside. The children are divided into groups and are provided quiet homework space, supervision and/or assistance.
- Students are offered at least 3 activity choices, which they select while enjoying group snack. Activities may include but are not limited to art, cooking, science, or sports. There is always an option for additional gross motor play and always an opportunity to “free play” in the classroom.

Neary Elementary School (Grades 4 & 5)
- Neary Elementary School students independently walk to the cafeteria from their classrooms. All of the children put away their belongings and check in with the Site Coordinator.
- Once attendance is taken, the children are divided into small groups and move down the hall to use the rest rooms and wash their hands. The students are allowed time to socialize with one another while waiting for all groups to complete this task.
- A choice of healthy snacks and a drink is provided and served buffet style to the students.
- During snack time, the Site Coordinator holds a “meeting” to inform the children of the activities planned for that day. Since Neary students are older, SEDP offers a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing the students to sign in before choosing to go outside or in the gym after everyone is finished with snack.
- Options for indoor free play or additional homework time are available for students. Special activities such as art projects or science challenges may also be started at this time.
- Scheduled homework time runs from 4-5pm. During this time, all children are reading, doing homework or some other quiet activity. All of the staff assists students with homework as needed.
- At 5pm, some children opt to go back outside, or in the gym, while others continue working on their homework or another planned activity for the day. This free choice play continues until the end of the day at 6 pm.

Trottier Middle School (Grades 6, 7 & 8)
- Trottier Middle School students arrive at the program from their classrooms and attendance is taken as they put away their belongings and wash their hands for a buffet-style choice of snacks and drink provided for them by SEDP.
- As many kids participate in school sponsored activities such as Intramural sports or R.A.P., SEDP coordinates student arrivals and departures so that all children are accounted for daily. The children enrolled at SEDP check in with the Site Coordinator before going to such activities and check back in when finished with those activities.
- After snack, the children choose to go outside or to the library for homework. As the homework load is heavy in middle school, many of the children want to get started right away. The children are able to use the library and computer lab to assist them with homework and SEDP staff is available to help as well.
- At this age, the children like to socialize with friends, get homework done and participate in activities independently or in small groups. Activities such as art, cooking or science are planned each day. The activity is usually student-directed so that they can read the directions and participate independently or with their peers.
